Both suspects were armed with guns and forced him into the home, demanding money, Curran said. The three men began to struggle, and Anton joined the fight after coming out of a back room, Curran said.

The younger brother told detectives that he sneaked away from the fight and returned with a shovel, but he was not able to scare off the assailants, Curran said. Anton was shot in the stomach before the suspects fled.

One suspect was described to authorities as heavyset and 5 feet 10 inches tall, Curran said.

The two were seen driving away in a late 1990s or early 2000s Ford Ranger pickup truck, dark green or black with an extended cab, Curran said.

It was not clear whether the suspects took anything from the home, Curran said. He said detectives did not find anything illegal inside.

Efforts to reach Anton's family were unsuccessful.

As the sun began to set and clouds gathered late Monday afternoon, a small group of people stood somberly in front of the Winding Way home. Candles flickered and balloons quivered in the breeze.

Those gathered declined to talk to The Bee.

Anton's shooting was the sixth homicide in the Sheriff's Department's jurisdiction in 2010.
