Two unknown assailants fatally shot a 31-year-old man and injured his younger brother after forcing their way into the victims' Fair Oaks home early Monday, according to authorities.
Cristian Anton suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach and died in an area hospital about 5 a.m., four hours after the attack on Winding Way, said Sgt. Tim Curran, Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
Anton's 25-year-old brother, who was not identified, was treated for an injury to his eye.
Monday evening, detectives continued their investigation. They had neither confirmed a motive nor identified suspects.
Curran said that so far in the investigation, detectives could not definitely say the victims were targeted, but added, "Based on experience, we know the vast majority of home invasions are targeted events."
According to Curran, the younger brother told detectives two men ambushed him about 1 a.m. as he walked to the front door of the brothers' home, a modest one-story residence tucked away from the road in the 7800 block of Winding Way, Curran said.
